The RTC (Regional Transportation Commission of Washoe County, Nevada) has an Active Transportation Plan that splits the Truckee Meadows into 12 distinct neighborhoods for planning purposes to make “walking, biking, and rolling” safer and more comfortable. The plan aims to remedy the following talking points:
- Residents feel unsafe getting around without a car due to aggressive/speeding vehicles.
- Crossing major roadways is challenging, unsafe, and uncomfortable for many pedestrians and cyclists.
- Many roads lack adequate pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure.
Sun Valley & Panther Valley are grouped together, and residents are tasked with creating a customized Neighborhood Network Plan specific to our two valleys.
Community Workshop on December 9th
The planning stage has begun, and RTC is asking for our input to help them identify areas of concern and implement effective traffic calming measures that align with our needs and preferences.
There will be a special Community Workshop to explain everything and answer questions:
- When: Tuesday, December 9, 2025 from 5 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.
- Where: Proctor R. Hug High School (3530 Sullivan Lane, Sparks NV 89431)
The Sun Valley & Panther Valley plan is expected to be completed by summer 2026 and will include recommendations for quick-build projects that can bring rapid improvements in transportation safety on our streets.
What is a Neighborhood Network Plan?
To help improve safety and connectivity for people walking, biking, and accessing transit within our neighborhood, as well as enhancing connections to nearby neighborhoods, the Neighborhood Network Planning process for Sun Valley and Panther Valley will:
- Gather public input
- Assess current conditions
- Review walking and biking patterns and connectivity to community destinations
- Create improvement scenarios with project recommendations
- Identify active transportation needs
What if I cannot attend the workshop?
