Sun Valley was abuzz with uneasiness after 7:00 p.m. on Sunday night, June 14, 2026, with news of the Chimney Fire being reported on the Watch Duty app, followed by subsequent speculation as to the cause of the brushfire.
According to the Crime Radar app, the fire purportedly may have been caused by three people with ATVs target shooting on the BLM public lands northwest of Sun Valley. In any case, the fire was too close for comfort for many Sun Valley residents.
Precautionary evacuations were briefly announced via the Perimeter Map app for the neighborhoods near the top of Sun Valley Blvd, such as the Chimney Road & Middle Fork Dr area, as well as the Quartz Ln area. The fire burned in the hills north of Esther Bennett Elementary School and Sun Valley Regional Park.
According to Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District, the Chimney Fire:
- Forward progress was stopped shortly after 9:00 p.m. on Sunday night
- Was 40% contained by early Monday
- Was 60% contained by mid Monday
- Was 80% contained by late Monday
- Was 100% contained by Tuesday
- Burned approximately 18 acres
Fire crews remained on the incident scene day and night throughout the duration of the fire.
“Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue and BLM Nevada operated in unified command, with support from Reno Fire Department, Sparks Fire Department, and Air Attack resources. Brief precautionary evacuations were implemented as firefighters worked aggressively to contain the fire. No structures were threatened, and no injuries were reported,” according to TMFPD via Instagram.
