Nevada State Senator Angie Taylor, Nevada State Assemblymember Heather Goulding, and Washoe County Commissioner Mariluz Garcia—all of whom represent and serve Sun Valley at different levels of government—organized and hosted this Back to School Supplies Giveaway event for students attending Esther Bennett, Virginia Palmer, Lois Allen, and Sun Valley elementary schools, and also Desert Skies Middle School in Sun Valley, NV.
The well-attended event was held earlier today in the Scolari’s parking lot in the center of Sun Valley, and saw approximately 350 students receiving clear backpacks and other school and art supplies like pencils, crayons, markers, scissors, glue sticks, folders, notebooks, and more. Additional sponsors of the event included the Nevada Black Legislative Caucus, Thrivent, and the Nevada Latino Legislative Caucus.

About The Event
Mariluz Garcia explains how the event came to fruition: “About a month ago, we started thinking about ways that we could give back to the Sun Valley community, and so Senator Angie Taylor, Assemblyperson Heather Goulding, and I teamed up and we started collecting donations. We had this drive-thru idea in mind right here at Scolari’s because it’s right in the heart of Sun Valley, and we were so excited. We had to open up the line early this morning, at 9:30 a.m., as people were eagerly waiting to collect their school supplies, which is great.”
“This was the first time we’ve collaborated like this, but I think it’s a really cool testament to how well we work together and how we’ve got the needs of Sun Valley on our minds. We all represent Sun Valley—they’re at the state level, and I’m here at the local government level. But I think it’s a beautiful thing when you can see those two different levels come together to help one community,” states Garcia.

Kids, You Got This!
Garcia has a special message for Sun Valley kids starting school on Monday: “Starting a new year of school can be a lot of anxiety, a lot of fear—or perhaps you’re just not feeling it—but I want you to know that you got this. We want you to walk into the school building prepared with your school supplies and feel confident, so that you have the right attitude on day one.”
Garcia continues, “A good attitude is going to carry you through the rest of the year, and you’ve got a lot of people that are rallying for you and supporting you along the way. We need you to have good attendance and bring your new school supplies. You’ve got a lot of people looking toward your bright future. Your success is our success. So, please keep up the hard work!”
