Earth Day, celebrated every year on April 22nd, is all about raising awareness and taking action to protect the environment. It’s a global event that brings together millions of people in over 190 countries to focus on things like pollution, conservation, deforestation, recycling, climate issues, wildlife management, and sustainable living.
Common Earth Day activities:
- Planting trees
- Organizing or joining clean-up efforts (parks, neighborhoods, open areas)
- Recycling
- Composting
- Educating others about conservation and pollution prevention
Sparked by an oil spill, Earth Day was founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson in 1970 to raise environmental awareness. The first event saw 20 million Americans participating. Now, it’s a global movement with over 1 billion people involved, coordinated by EarthDay.org. The theme changes each year, but the purpose remains to raise awareness about environmental issues.

How You Can Participate in Sun Valley
- Join us for The Great Community Cleanup 2025 on Saturday, May 3rd, from 8 AM to 12 PM. Join KTMB (Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful) at Chimney Road in Sun Valley. Chimney Road (a.k.a. Chimney Drive, off of Leon Dr and Sun Valley Blvd) is an access point to the surrounding BLM recreation area, and is a hotspot for littering and illegal dumping. 4×4 vehicles and trailers are appreciated to help access and remove trash from remote areas. Please wear long pants and closed-toe shoes. Bring a water bottle, sunscreen, and work gloves. KTMB will supply tools, snacks, and water. Hell’s Angels will provide transport into the area for those without 4-wheel drive vehicles or ATVs. All youth 17 and under must have an adult present. Small children under 12 are not advised given the scale of work to be done. Sign up here.
Whether you’re participating in a community cleanup, planting trees, composting, recycling, or reducing plastic use, Earth Day is a chance for everyone to unite in protecting our planet. It’s basically a giant reminder that this is our only home—and we’ve got to take care of it. 🌍💚
