You may think you know the answer to this one, but it’s not that simple…
As it turns out, there are four (4) Proctor Hugs, so it’s important to make the distinction between Proctor R. Hug, Sr., Proctor R. Hug, Jr., Proctor Hug III, and Proctor Hug IV.
Proctor R. Hug High School is named after the original: Proctor Ralph Hug, Sr., and it was originally built in 1968 on the corner of N McCarran Blvd and Sutro St in Reno, and then rebuilt on Sullivan Ln in Sparks in 2022.[2,3]
The school’s eponym was born in 1902 and passed away in 1991. Born in Oregon, he moved to Tonopah and lived nearly his entire life in Nevada, graduating from UNR, and becoming a coach at Sparks High School, and then its principal, followed by becoming the Superintendent for the Washoe County School District. After retirement, he was elected a Nevada state senator.[1]
Hug, Sr. is the father of Proctor R. Hug, Jr., the noted lawyer, Chairman of the UNR Board of Regents, and Chief Judge Emeritus of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, who passed away in 2019.[4]
Hug High School is home to Rollins Stallworth Stadium, named after championship-winning Coach Rollins Stallworth II, and Grove Holcomb Field.
