As a non-Spanish speaker, I’ll be the first to admit that when I see the word “kermés,” I hear Miss Piggy (from The Muppet Show) in my head calling Kermit the Frog her “little Kermie.” But, that’s my own personal foible…
Sun Valley, NV Facebook users will occasionally see posts about an upcoming kermés in their neighborhood, and may wonder what one is, exactly. Well, look no further—we are happy to unravel the mystery here and now.
So, What is it?
In Spanish-speaking cultures—particularly in Mexico and parts of Latin America—a kermés (the Spanish spelling of kermesse) is a vibrant, outdoor community festival or bazaar, usually organized for charitable purposes. Think of it like a local GoFundMe campaign, but with delicious food!
What Happens at a Kermés?
They are usually organized by schools, churches, or neighborhoods to raise money for a cause. If you attend one, you can expect:
- Traditional Food: This is the main event. You’ll typically find stalls selling elotes (corn on the cob with chili and crema), tacos, tamales, pozole, and churros.
- The “Registro Civil” (Fake Marriage Booth): A classic kermés staple where friends or “couples” can pay a small fee to get “married” with a fake certificate and a playful ceremony.
- Classic Games: Many booths feature games of chance or skill, like:
- Lotería: Mexican bingo.
- Canicas: A game involving marbles and numbered slots.
- Puesto de Cárcel: A “jail” where you can pay to have a friend “arrested” for a few minutes until someone pays their “bail.”
- Entertainment: Expect live music (mariachi or local bands), folkloric dancing, and raffles.
Language and Pronunciation Tips
For English speakers, “kermés” is pronounced like “care-MESS”—with the emphasis on the second syllable. (It would be hilariously incorrect to say it like Miss Piggy.)
In Spanish, the word is almost always spelled with an accent: kermés.
- Singular: La kermés
- Plural: Las kermeses
