Procter R. Hug High School is a school full of diversity and values culture. It has over 2,000 students–mainly from Sun Valley–and a community full of kindness. The school provides a lot of opportunities for students. After recent changes, the school moved closer towards the Sun Valley community in 2022.

At Hug High, they provide a Communities in Schools resource center. There, students can give feedback and connect with their community. This year, they’ve been trying to get the parents more involved with the school. CIS coordinator Alex Gasetoto stated, “Something we wanted to work on this year was getting more interactions from the parents in the community, to understand what they’re seeing and what they want to see, but we can’t get your suggestions without your input.”

Furthermore, Hug is a unique school in its own way. It’s a very special place to some people and carries a lot of memories. KC Miller, a wonderful counselor at Hug, shared, “The community in this school is what makes it special–the connections that people can make and the relationships that are built here. We also have a really cool population.” As a Hug student myself, I can confirm that there are lots of opportunities at this school and resources that help us as students.

The culture and core values at Hug stand out. Jason Aytes, Assistant Principal, explained, “The culture and core values are something that are always changing, but always for the better. We have a lot of turn-over in our population, and our students and staff. So, sometimes it takes a while to get settled. However, I think they’re definitely important, and we are always working to make them better.” Hug shows their motivation and determination to keep things in place and to always improve the school.

Like any other school, there are challenges that we face, and one of the biggest challenges is attendance. Assistant Principal David Sayer expressed, “Our school faces getting kids into class on time. Also, just the motivation for kids to be on time. We need to figure out a way to do that.”

In conclusion, Procter R. Hug High School stands out for its kindness, community connections, and cultural values. Despite the challenges, the school’s commitment to improve and its unique population make it a very special place in the Sun Valley adjacent community.
