National Migration Week

In a letter posted in both English and Spanish by Bishop Daniel H. Mueggenborg on Facebook, he states, “This observance connects the plight of migrants in our land and throughout the world to the plight of the migrating Joseph, Mary, and infant Jesus and the scriptural mandate to welcome the stranger, the alien, the orphan, and the widow.” Indeed, Biblical verses abound calling for us to be welcoming to immigrants.

Facebook post from the Diocese of Reno regarding National Migration Week 2025.

According to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, “For 45 years, the Catholic Church in the United States has celebrated National Migration Week (NMW). This is an opportunity to reflect on our history as an immigrant Church and the ways in which our country has been enriched by generations of immigrants, including the many Catholics who have adopted this land as their own. It is also an occasion to grow in appreciation of the challenges faced by migrants and refugees, both in the United States and beyond, and to express solidarity through prayer, accompaniment, and advocacy. Pope Francis chose ‘Migrants, missionaries of hope’ for this year’s theme.”

Migrants, Missionaries of Hope

The Life, Peace & Justice Commission of the Diocese of Reno presents “A Mass in Solidarity with Migrants” on September 24, 2025 at 7:00 p.m. at the St. Thomas Aquinas Cathedral, located at 310 West Second Street in Reno, NV.

“I invite everyone to come and pray for the many human beings, both in our land and throughout the world, who find themselves caught without a land to call home, often due to violence and/or natural disaster. We pray also for reasonable and just immigration reform,” Mueggenborg stated.
