Five Steps Behind

5 Steps Behind, by Saturn Davi

Observe as the clique passes the streetlamp
Count until you reach the same monument
Taught from driving lessons in order to
Know how far ahead you’re looking
Start at one, two, three, four, five steps
Five steps behind

Claw at exposed arms under your jacket
Say there’s no space, or nobody wants to make any
Know it’s the former as you convince yourself the latter
Know it’s the latter as you convince yourself the former
Acknowledge it is a self-inflicted demise as you
Distance yourself from the group again
Reflect again for the first, second, third, forth, fifth time
Five steps behind

Try to speak, but you can’t find the energy to
Articulate through vocal chords
Coordinate not only your
Mind
Hands
Eyes
Lungs
Heart
But now, your mouth, your voice
Which voice, indeed? You cannot
Remember which one belongs to you
Hear one, two, three, four, five at once
Five steps behind

One path that you just can’t seem to take
Too loud, or perhaps too quiet
Three more years until you disappoint everyone you love
For they all tried to give you
Five million chances to be normal and yet you are still
Five steps behind
