Procter Hug, Sr. was born on October 25, 1902. He was from Oregon and spent almost all his life in Nevada. He went to schools in Oregon and California and later went to high school in Tonopah, Nevada.

During high school, Procter Hug became fascinated with sports and participated on his school sports team. After high school, he continued to play sports at the University of Nevada playing football, basketball, and track.

After playing all those sports, it led him to a coaching and a teaching career at Sparks High School in 1927. He coached the same sports he played in college (football, basketball, and track). He led Sparks High School’s athletic team to many championships and soon became the principal of Sparks High School from 1937 to 1949. And he also became the superintendent of Sparks District Schools and then became the assistant superintendent of the Washoe County School District in 1956.

After nearly 40 years in education, he retired in 1966. After his retirement, he ran for and was elected to a seat in the Nevada State Senate. He helped Nevada’s education system to be better and worked constantly for educational improvement. Procter Hug, Sr. passed away on September 19, 1991, at the age of 88, leaving Northern Nevada’s youth with better opportunities for quality education.

About the Author

Gia Fernandez

My name is Gia Fernandez, and I am studying to become a Physical Therapist. My interests are playing volleyball and painting.

Something I want to achieve is ending the school year off with A’s and B’s and getting better at overhand serving. Some of my strengths are being polite and helping people.

A challenge that I have faced was getting constantly blamed for something that I didn’t do, and others telling me that I am never going to be successful in life. I chose this field because its different from what my mom wants me to do and helping people gain back their ability to function and move after an injuring that may have changed their life is something that I would love to do as my future career.

My interests outside of this is to practice volleyball and to bake. Listening to music is usually what motivates me. My goals are to become a Physical Therapist, make it to a Health Science program, and to make my parents proud.

My values are my family, honesty, and love. One of my greatest accomplishments is passing geometry last semester. I like to talk a lot, and I like to make sure that I am focused and dedicated to what I am doing.
